Why the Scale isn't the Holy Grail

Ok, I have a huge client – trainer pet peeve that I'm going to address here today.

Every single one of us wants to lose five to ten pounds. And usually we think this will happen in five days! We need to stop doing this to ourselves!!

It's not healthy and really says nothing about our fat loss.

Here's Why:

Contrary to popular belief muscle doesn’t weigh more than fat. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. Muscle is more dense than fat, so a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. That's why you're going to lose inches before you start losing weight on the scale.

Fat loss and weight loss are two very different things. It's extremely important to distinguish between the two. Watch your inches closely and not the scale to see the most accurate indicators of your fat loss!

Robin's Story

I have this awesome client Robin who came to me with a goal to tone up her core and lose, you guessed it – five pounds! In our first month together Robin lost 12 inches and gained three pounds, this is normal! We're now on month three together and she's down a total of seven pounds and also lost over 18 inches.

Be patient! It takes time but weight loss is a science, if you're doing everything right it works!

I think it is good practice to weight yourselves but only once per week and promise me you will cut yourselves some slack!

Bottom Line: Weigh yourself once per week and take measurements monthly to track your progress!
